Hides are heavy, and their weight can slow you down while hunting.  You can overcome this by creating [[leather]] out of them on the spot by bringing [[lye]] with you.  Leather is much lower weight than hides.

A hide skinned from an animal.

Animal hide can be butchered from some animals: bull, calf, cow, crocodile, deer, foal, horse, or unicorn. Animal hide is used to create leather with lye.

Dragons give special drake hide when butchered.
